I didn’t really love their name for me but I’d followed Evanora out of the receiving room, up a set of stairs, and down a long, white hallway. There was an airy, homey feel to the space as we passed beautifully painted canvases and purple billowy plants. We passed several rooms that looked like meeting rooms, occasionally filled with groups of demons. I wondered how the hell everything fit inside this small building. There must be demon magic involved.
She led me into a large office, with black, glossy stone flooring, a large white desk, and wooden carvings filling the edges. There was a small, circular pool in the middle of the room filled with azure water. Dad told me that some seer demons use water as portals to their visions, and I wondered if this was hers.
After I stepped inside, I heard the door click shut behind me. It was only then that I realized that the warrior dude had followed us inside. Dude had been quiet as church mice. Wait, mice were kinda noisy. More like a pixie. Those things could blink in and out of a room without a sound, with only the sparkle of their magic the only indication that they’d even been there.
“Rogue, come in and sit down.”
The man strode around me, avoiding the pool and taking a seat on the black leather couch. He sat on the edge, his hands on his knees, staring at me with a scowl on his face. I put my hands on my hips, staring right back at him.
I was like, focking good at the staring game.
Lennox and I used to play it all the time as kids. It had taken me a while to be able to stare him down but after a while, I’d toughened up, and now I was the Queen of Stare.
Pfft. This dude, while kinda scary looking, had nothing on Lennox.
After a moment, he blinked, then gave me a nod. “Ma’am.”
Well, at least stare-face Rogue was kinda polite. Maybe his mom never taught him it was rude to stare. There was still something about him though that made me uneasy.
I let it go. He’d backed down. That was a good thing.
The mood in the room grew even more strained as Evanora moved past me, her soft silky fabric rustling with her. She walked over to her desk, then leaned her sexy ass against it. Her demeanor changed from sweet and concerned to scrutinizing and mistrustful. Her arms came up to cross across her chest and her gaze on me could burn the socks off an ostrich. A fast one.
What the ever-loving fock was going on? Wasn’t I supposed to be the special one or some shit like that?
She finally spoke, and when she did, her voice came out a bite. “What I want to know,” she paused, tilting her head to the side, “is what a being like you is doing with my men?”
“Excuse me?”
She laughed, a chilling sound. “Oh, you don’t know, do you?”
“Know
